Earth Science
"What the heck is earth science?"
Earth science is the branch of science that encompasses all studies related to the physical parts of the earth and its atmosphere. Earth science can be broken down even further into the following branches of science: geology, oceanography, and meteorology. "Ok....so why should I take this course?" Ever wonder how earthquakes happen? How volcanoes erupt? How a dinosaur lived? How storms form? What the chemical composition of the ocean was? What controls our weather? Where we get oil that runs our cars from? How the earth's plates move? What causes it to snow in some places and not in others? How to be an environmentally sustainable citizen? |
If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, this class if for you! You will learn about the earth as a system and the various cycles within it and how they all interact with one another. Why not learn about the planet we live on and know how it works? We survive on it and off its resources, so the more we know about it and how we can positively and negatively affect it, the better off we will be as a whole. |
Chemistry
So if you one day want to be a doctor, a scientist, a chef, an engineer....then take this course because I am 100% sure that you need chemistry!!!
In some way we are all chemists!! In this class you will learn about the various elements that compose our universe and their properties, structures, and compositions. You will also learn how these elements react and form compounds with other elements and how to calculate the amounts of these elements and compounds. You will be able to do calculations and balance chemical equations. You will also learn how chemistry is applied in the "real world". |
"I think I know what chemistry is..."
Chemistry is the physical science that studies all matter. It studies the composition, the structure, and its properties. Chemistry can be further broken down into analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. "Ok...so why should I take this course?" Well besides that this course is most likely required for you to graduate or to go to college, why not take chemistry? Chemistry is happening everywhere at this very moment! Your body functions because a series of chemical reactions are occurring simultaneously inside you. From the food you eat to the air you breathe, the moment it enters your body it begins to react with other chemicals in your body and these reactions keep you alive. Everything is made up of chemicals! The water you are drinking, the food you are eating, the air you are breathing, the gasoline that we put in our car. Chemistry is involved in everything, and if we weren't sure how these chemicals reacted with one another or their properties we would be in trouble! |
